The word “Desta” means happiness in Amharic. The Desta project is a collection of projects and activities developed by AFC.  The children came up with the name.  The goal of the Desta project is to teach the children the professional, creative, and interpersonal skills needed to acclimate to the real world and, over time, generate self-sustaining revenue for the operations of the Children’s Home.

The Desta project promotes international collaboration and volunteerism. AFC works with international volunteers and artists in residence to assist the children the skills necessary to produce original products (tee-shirts, hats, fashionable bags, thank-you cards, etc.) that are then sold at fundraisers and returned as revenue for the Children’s Home.

The fact that the children are generating their own income provides them a great sense of achievement and empowers them to view themselves not as victims but as productive and able members of society.
