She tried placing him in various facilities, but they all had either reached capacity or turned him away because of his condition. When she eventually found a home for him, she noticed a bigger problem: Numerous children were battling similar struggles, once taken in by relatives only to be abused or abandoned because of their disease.

AFC is so thrilled to have sent our first child off to college this fall. Samrawit, pictured above, started her studies this September at Addis Ababa University. She wants to be a child psychologist and help other children to overcome trauma and grief. Thanks to supporters everywhere we continue to raise the AFC children to become successful and help them reach their dreams. By believing in the limitless potential of every child and giving them a chance, we have watched our children beat the odds.  When you help AFC change the world for one child, you create a child who will change the world.  GOOD luck from the AFC team as Samri begins this new chapter in her life!

Artists for Charity will host the 6th Annual Holiday Benefit and Art Auction on Saturday, December 1, at 7:00 pm. The event will take place at the DC Architecture Center located at 421 7th St. NW Washington, DC 20004. The benefit will be held on World AIDS Day and will feature artwork from local and international artists. Artwork made by children from the AFC Children’s home will also be featured in the benefit.

For six years Artists for Charity (AFC) has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of HIV positive orphans in Ethiopia. AFC, a small, grassroots, non-profit runs the AFC Children’s Home, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which raises HIV positive double orphans. AFC was one of the first few places to accept children living with HIV in Ethiopia, with the strong belief that through love, support and access to good health care and treatment, these children would not only survive, but they would thrive. And this is what they did. Today, AFC is proud to have sent their first child to college. AFC is proud to say that all of the children living at the Home are healthy, happy human beings and the organization has expanded its efforts in 2011 through the community outreach project reaching HIV positive children in local communities in Ethiopia.

AFC relies solely on individual donations and has been able to succeed over the years with continuous efforts of dedicated, passionate volunteers, artists, sponsors and donors. The Annual Holiday Benefit and Art Auction, based in Washington DC has been a driving force for raising funds for the organization. Through it we have been able to raise over $80,000. AFC has established a strong core network of individuals from the Washington DC area that come together every year to show their support for the cause. Now in it’s 6^th year, AFC wants to showcase the successes of this small, yet powerful organization that has managed to make a difference in the lives of these children.

The AFC Holiday Benefit and Art Auction gives everyone a chance to hear the stories of the AFC Children, learn more about AFC’s model and support the HIV/AIDS cause. Join AFC at the 6^th Annual Benefit and Art Auction for an eventful evening of art, entertainment, awareness, food and drinks. Advanced tickets are only $40 and $45 at the door.
